Rand identified herself as a Romantic writer, not a Classicist or a Naturalist. But why have schools of art at all? Should not an artist, like Howard Roark, defy convention? This talk explains why there are three and only three great schools of art (hint: Aristotle provides the reason in the Poetics) and why no artist can ultimately avoid joining one or another of their camps. It further explains why these facts support, rather than constrain, freedom of artistic expression.
This talk was recorded at the 2014 Objectivist Summer Conference in Las Vegas, NV.
